From Sketches to Spotlight: The Story of Gene Boshkaykin
We’re still in celebration mode as our grand reopening event has just passed. This milestone meant a lot to us as a dealership, but what made it even more special was a gift we didn’t expect. One of our own, Gene Boshkaykin — a Lot Porter at Half-Way Motors Nissan and also a very successful and talented artist — presented us with a beautiful hand-drawn portrait of our new building.
The drawing touched all of us. It captured the pride and effort behind our new space, but more than that, it reflected the unique spirit of the people who make up our team. Our dealership has always been successful because of our people, and our people are all so unique and talented in their own ways. This was the perfect opportunity to highlight Gene and his story.

Gene’s Journey in Art
Gene has been drawing since he was a child. For him, art was always a way of expressing himself and making sense of the world around him. Even though life took him in different directions, he always returned to the sketchbook. About seven years ago, he committed fully to portraiture, and that’s when his work began to take off.

His biggest source of inspiration is people — their resilience, their character, and their stories. Being Indigenous, Gene also draws strength and vision from his culture and community. His personal sobriety journey has given him clarity and purpose, fueling his drive to share healing and strength through his work.
In his words: “It’s been humbling and exciting. When people reach out for a portrait, they’re really trusting me with something personal — their image, their story, or sometimes a loved one’s memory. Each commission feels like an honour.”
Recognition and Accomplishments
Over the past few years, Gene’s talent has been recognized across Canada and beyond. In 2024, he was named one of the World’s Best Portraitists by the American Art Awards, placing among the Top 11 artists in Canada. He also received a World Art Award and a 2nd place tie in portraiture.
His work has been exhibited locally at Co-Lab Gallery, Calico Coffeehouse, the Indigenous Market at Goods & Co., and the City of Thunder Bay’s Arts & Culture Under the Lights. His portraits have also been featured on APTN News, Alberta Native News, The Walleye, CTV News, and Dougall Media.

Half-Way Motors and Gene’s Story
Gene has been with Half-Way Motors Nissan for six years. His role here has given him stability and community while building his career as an artist. For him, the dealership has been a solid foundation — a place where he can support himself while continuing to grow his art.
When the new building was completed, Gene knew he wanted to create something that marked the moment. His drawing of the dealership is both a personal gift and a lasting reminder of this new chapter for Half-Way Motors. It speaks to the connection between his two worlds — his work here with us, and his work as an artist.
Looking Ahead
As for the future, Gene is only getting started. In his own words: “I see my future continuing to grow in portraiture — both through commissions and exhibitions. I want to keep sharing Indigenous stories and perspectives through my art, and to bring that work to larger audiences across Canada and beyond. The recognition I’ve received so far is just the beginning.”
For Gene, every portrait is more than a likeness — it’s a story, a connection, and a chance to celebrate resilience and humanity.
Stories like Gene’s remind us of what makes Half-Way Motors Nissan so special. Our success has always been built on the people behind it — people with unique experiences, skills, and passions who bring more to the table than just their job title.
We’re proud to celebrate Gene, his gift, and the inspiration he brings to our team. And we’re proud to stand behind each of our employees, because without them, we wouldn’t be who we are today.
